Focus On The Children:

You, Your Child and Writing

by Elder Charlotte Hall

In order to make writing an enjoyable part of daily life for you and your child we need to practice.

Remember “practice makes perfect”. Simple suggestions that will help make writing come alive:

WRITE NOTES, LISTS AND MENUS - For example, * have your child write a note to you to remind you of something, * make a grocery list, * make a menu for family meals.

PUT UP A MESSAGE BOARD OR BULLETIN BOARD - * teach your child to write out phone and other messages and leave them where they’ll be read. Post a weekly favorite scripture.

WRITE LETTERS AND INVITATIONS - * explain to your child that writing a personal note takes time--but it’s the polite thing to do. Personal notes make the people who receive them feel special, write notes to your child too.

PLAN TRIPS AND ERRANDS - * ask your child to list the places you’ll visit on a trip. Or, have your child write directions to a place where you need to run an errand.

MAKE SIGNS FOR THE HOUSE - * for example, your child can make signs for a birthday party or other special occasions.

MAKE A SCHEDULE- * have your child plan the day’s or week’s activities.

READ TOGETHER- * reading is an enjoyable--and educational--experience. It can help teach correct spelling, expand vocabulary and encourage a young writer’s imagination.

Have fun with writing. Children are eager to write--as long as it’s not a chore. There are activities that will make writing enjoyable: games, journal/diary writing, songs, poems, computers and typewriters just to name a few.

You may find that you have an author or journalist in the making. Train up a child in the way he should go; when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6. This means that the things your child has a natural nack for or a passion for, support and encourage him/her in that area and expose him/her to others. As you stimulate your child in a variety of areas, your excitement will grow as you see his/her gifts and talents begin to emerge. Parts of this article excerpted from Scriptographic/ Channing L.
